South African Cheetah Gamini gives birth to 3 cubs at Kuno National Park

Gamini, a South African cheetah, has given birth to three cubs at Kuno National Park, taking the country’s total cheetah population to 38. Sharing this in a social media post, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav today said that the number of surviving Indian-born cheetah cubs has now increased to 27. He said, with this, the ninth successful cheetah litter has been recorded on Indian soil.

The Minister has informed that Gamini has become a mother for the second time. The birth coincides with the completion of three years since the cheetahs were brought from South Africa to India. The Minister said that each successful birth strengthens Project Cheetah and this development marks an important milestone in the country’s cheetah conservation efforts.

Our correspondent reports that the world’s first inter-continental translocation of a large carnivore was completed with 20 cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa coming to India in 2022-23. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally released the first eight cheetahs on 17th September 2022.
