Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrates thousand year legacy of faith and resilience

The ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’ currently underway at the first Jyotirlinga is a grand celebration of the thousand-year history of resilience and faith. Central to this festival is the legacy of the legendary martyr Hamirji Gohil, whose supreme sacrifice to defend the temple remains a cornerstone of India’s national identity.

The shores of Somnath are currently echoing with the saga of Hamirji Gohil, the brave prince of Lathi. Historical accounts recall his solemn resolve to protect the sacred Shivalinga when the invading army of Zafar Khan attacked the shrine.

Choosing duty over his throne and newly-wed wife, Hamirji led a determined force against a massive invading army. He was joined by valiant warriors like Vegadaji Bhil, marking a historic alliance of bravery. Today, his memorial and grand statue at the temple’s main entrance stand as a testament to this selfless sacrifice.

In his book ‘Somnath: The Shrine Eternal,’ K.M. Munshi describes such valour as the lifeblood of India’s cultural pride. The ongoing ‘Swabhiman Parv’ aims to instil this spirit of ‘Asmita’ and national pride among the younger generation. A major highlight is the ‘Shaurya Yatra’ scheduled for January 11th, featuring one hundred and eight horsemen.

The procession will commence from the statue of Hamirji, symbolising the continuity of his heroic legacy. The festival serves as a vital bridge, connecting the youth with the 1,000-year struggle and triumphant reconstruction of the shrine. Aparna
