Domestic markets end in positive territory

 
   

Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, started the session with gains and extended the momentum throughout the day. Indices ended higher for the third consecutive session. The Sensex surged 595 points or 0.71 per cent to close at 84 thousand 467, while the Nifty advanced 181 points or 0.7 per cent to settle at 25 thousand 876. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in positive territory. The Mid-Cap index gained over 0.4 per cent, while the Small-Cap index climbed around 0.8 per cent.
 
In the Sensex pack, 22 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Asian Paints surged around four and half a per cent, Tech Mahindra rose over 3.3 per cent and Tata Consultancy Services added over 2.7 per cent. In the top laggards, Tata Steel as well as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, both dipped 1.3 per cent, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles Limited shed nearly 0.8 per cent and Bharat Electronics Limited fell over 0.6 per cent.  
 
Across sectoral indices at the BSE, 18 out of 21 sectors ended in positive territory. Among the leading gainers, Focused IT as well as IT, both rose around two per cent, Consumer Durables advanced nearly 1.9 per cent, and Teck increased around 1.8 per cent. In contrast, among the decliners, Realty fell half a per cent, and Utilities as well as Metal, both dipped marginally.
 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2,509 companies advanced, 1,701 declined, and 163 remained unchanged.
