Benchmark domestic equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, fell for 8th straight session and ended marginally lower in a range bound market today. The Sensex lost 97 points, to close at 80 thousand and 268, while Nifty decreased 24 points, to settle at 24 thousand 611. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed flat. The Mid-Cap index as well as Small-Cap index almost remained unchanged.
In the Sensex pack, 17 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Ultratech Cement as well as Adani Ports rose over 1.4 per cent each, Tata Motors gained almost 1.2 per cent and Bharat Electronics Limited added around one per cent. Among the top laggards, Bharti Airtel fell over 1.2 per cent, ITC lost 1.2 per cent and Trent dipped over 1.1 per cent.
Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 15 out of 21 sectors logged losses. Among the top laggards, Telecommunication dropped over 0.9 per cent, Realty as well as Consumer Durables lost almost 0.8 per cent and Teck slipped 0.5 per cent. Among the top gainers, Metal advanced 1.1 per cent, Commodities rose over 0.6 per cent and Auto added 0.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,047 companies advanced and shares of 2,046 companies declined while shares of 167 companies remained unchanged.
