Benchmark domestic equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, opened in the red on the first trading session of the week. The indices traded lower throughout day but recovered some losses in the last hour, closing down by 0.2 per cent. The Sensex lost 174 points to close at 82 thousand 327, while Nifty dipped 58 points to settle at 25 thousand 227. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in negative territory. The Mid-Cap index declined around 0.2 percent, and the Small-Cap index slipped over 0.4 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 18 out of 30 companies edged downward. Among the top laggards, Tata Motors fell around 2.7 per cent, Hindustan Unilever slipped over 1.4 per cent and Infosys dipped 1.4 per cent. Among the top gainers, Adani Ports surged two per cent, Bajaj Finance rose over 1.3 per cent and Bajaj Finserv advanced over 0.9 per cent.
Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 15 out of 21 sectors ended in Negative zone. Among the top laggards, IT lost 0.9 per cent, Capital Goods as well as FMCG, both dropped over 0.8 per cent and Focused IT slipped 0.8 per cent. Among the top gainers, Services advanced more than half a per cent, Financial Services rose 0.2 per cent and Bankex added 0.1 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was Negative as shares of two thousand 627 companies declined and shares of 1,664 companies advanced while shares of 168 companies remained unchanged.
