In the Indian stock market, the Sensex ended with modest gains while the Nifty settled nearly unchanged in a volatile trading session today. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, advanced 260 points, or 0.32 percent, to close at 80,502. The National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 increased marginally by 13 points to settle at 24,347.
Conversely, the broader market indices at the BSE logged losses. The Mid-Cap index declined 0.4 per cent and the Small-Cap index ended nearly flat.
In the Sensex index, 19 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top gainers, Adani Ports surged over 4.1 percent, Bajaj Finance rose over 2.6 percent, and IndusInd Bank advanced more than 1.6 percent. In the top laggards, Nestle India slid two percent, NTPC slipped 1.6 percent, and Kotak Bank dropped 1.36 percent.
In sectoral indices at the BSE, 14 out of 21 sectors ended in negative territory. In the top laggards, telecommunications fell over two percent, consumer durables declined over 1.6 percent, and power slipped over 0.9 percent. Among the top gainers, services climbed more than 1.6 percent, oil and gas advanced almost 0.7 percent and energy added over half percent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 2,183 companies declined, 1,761 advanced, and shares of 141 companies remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 26 companies hit their 52-week high, while 31 companies hit their 52-week low.
