Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty witnessed a strong rally today. The Sensex climbed 650 points or 0.79 per cent to close at 83 thousand 277. The Nifty also added 211 points or 0.83 per cent to settle at 25 thousand 682. The rebound was driven by value buying in realty, pharma and FMCG sectors.
In the Sensex pack, 21 out of the 30 companies logged gains. Among the gainers, Power Gird surged over 4.4 per cent, HDFC Bank rose around 2.2 per cent, and Axis Bank added more than 1.9 per cent. Among the top laggards, Tech Mahindra shed over 1.4 per cent, Maruti dropped more than 1.1 per cent, and Bajaj Finance fell over one per cent.
Among the BSE sectoral indices, 21 of the 23 sectors ended in positive territory. Among the gainers, Power rose over 2.4 per cent, Utilities jumped more than 2.1 per cent and Realty advanced over 1.4 per cent. Among the two laggards, Auto dropped 0.8 per cent, and Consumer Discretionary lost more than 0.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2 thousand and 510 companies declined, 1 thousand and 793 advanced, and 193 remained unchanged.
