Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, extended initial losses and closed 0.7 per cent down today. Markets had started day on a weak note, and stayed in negative zone throughout the session. The Sensex fell 593 points to close at 84 thousand 404, while the Nifty dropped 176 points to settle at 25 thousand and 878. In the broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Mid-Cap index ended unchanged while the Small-Cap index settled nearly flat, with a negative bias.
