In a major diplomatic win for India, the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) unequivocally condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, extended condolences to the victims, and called for justice against those responsible. At the conclusion of the 25th Council of Heads of State summit of the SCO, held in Tianjin, China, the Tianjin Declaration was adopted, delivering a comprehensive statement of unity against terrorism and acknowledging India’s contributions to regional peace and development. The declaration rejected double standards in counterterrorism efforts and emphasized the importance of global cooperation to prevent the cross-border movement of terrorists.
The Tianjin Declaration also conveyed a strong and unified message against terrorism, separatism, and extremism. It recognized India’s global vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” reaffirming the country’s leadership in promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
The summit highlighted a renewed focus on regional stability, security, and sustainable progress. Held under the theme Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move, it brought together leaders from over 20 nations and 10 international organizations.
Addressing the Summit, Prime Minister highlighted India’s approach to strengthening cooperation under the SCO framework. In this regard, he noted that India seeks greater action under three pillars – Security, Connectivity and Opportunity. Emphasising that peace, security and stability remain key to progress and prosperity, he called upon member countries to take firm and decisive action to fight terrorism in all its manifestations. Prime Minister underlined the need for coordinated action against terror financing and radicalization. Mr Modi emphasized that there should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism and urged the group to hold countries who perpetrate and support cross-border terrorism accountable.
Highlighting the role of connectivity in fostering development and building trust, the Prime Minister stated that India strongly supported projects such as Chabahar port and International North-South Transport Corridor. He also spoke about opportunities in the fields of start-ups, innovation, youth empowerment and shared heritage, which must be pursued under the SCO umbrella.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Putin today to review ties in energy, economy, and strategy under their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Both the leadres also discussed the Ukraine conflict, with Mr. Modi emphasizing peace through dialogue. The Prime Minister also looked forward to hosting Putin for the 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit later this year.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders reaffirmed that India and China are development partners, not rivals. Mr. Modi stressed the importance of border peace for stronger ties.
