Renowned Kannada writer Dr S. L. Bhyrappa passes away in Bengaluru

Renowned Kannada writer Dr S L Bhyrappa passed away in Bengaluru today afternoon. He suffered cardiac arrest in a private hospital where he was admitted for age-related health issues. He was 94 years old. A prolific writer, Bhyrappa wrote over 25 novels that drew public debate and intellectual discourse due to their themes and thought-provoking narratives. Some of his most celebrated novels include Vamshavruksha, Daatu, Parva, Grihabhanga, Aavarana, Nayi Neralu and Sartha.

 

The movies based on his novels have received critical acclaim. His novels are translated into many Indian and foreign languages. He is the recipient of the highest recognition, including the Padma Bhushan in 2023 and the Saraswati Samman in 2010. He was also honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2015. The esteemed writer’s mortal remains will be taken to Mysuru tomorrow for people to pay their last respects, and cremation will be held on Friday.
