Relief as monsoon rains subside in Himachal; restoration on war footing, 135 dead, 34 missing

With the monsoon rains subsiding in Himachal Pradesh, people have got some relief today. Meanwhile, efforts to clear the roads blocked due to landslides are being carried out on a war footing. In addition, steps are being taken to restore the electricity and drinking water supply in disaster-affected areas.

 

Akashvani correspondent reports that according to the State Emergency Operations Centre, 135 people have lost their lives so far in Himachal Pradesh during the current monsoon season due to heavy rains, landslides, and cloudbursts, while 34 people are still missing. Due to landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, 383 roads, including 2 national highways, are currently closed to traffic. In addition, 263 power transformers and 220 drinking water schemes are non-functional. However, restoration work on roads, electricity, and water supply is underway on a war footing in the affected areas. So far, the state has suffered an estimated loss of around rupees 1,247 crore due to natural disasters. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in some parts of the state from today till July 26.
