relentless rainfall triggers floods in Jammu; schools closed, exams postponed

In Jammu and Kashmir, relentless rainfall over the past 24 hours has triggered a flood emergency across the Jammu division. Water levels in major rivers like the Tawi, Chenab, Neru, and Kalnai have surged, posing serious threats to low-lying areas. The Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall, heightening concerns of further inundation. At least four people have lost their lives in Doda district, two in a house collapse and two in flash floods. Marmat and Tanta are among the worst-hit areas, where three footbridges and around 15 houses were swept away. Significant damage to residential structures has been reported. All government and private schools across the Jammu division remain closed for a second consecutive day. The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education has postponed Class 10 and 11 exams scheduled for tomorrow. The pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been suspended, with the Himkoti route closed due to heavy rainfall. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and Jammu-Udhampur up-tube are shut due to landslides and waterlogging. Traffic has also been halted on the Katra-Shiv Khori road. Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, with SDRF and police teams deployed. Authorities have issued helpline numbers and placed all departments on high alert.
