Railways Rationalises Fares from 26th; Ordinary Class Up to 215 km Unchanged

The Railways has rationalised its fare structure with effect from the 26th of this month. Under the revised structure, there will be no increase in fares for journeys of up to 215 kilometres in the Ordinary Class.

For journeys beyond 215 kilometres, fares will increase by 1 paise per kilometre in the Ordinary Class, while fares will go up by 2 paise per kilometre for Non-AC class in Mail and Express trains. In AC class, the railways has increased the fare by 2 paise per kilometre. It also highlighted that fare in suburban and monthly season ticket have not been increased. 

The Railways said that rationalisation is expected to generate additional revenue of about 6 hundred crore rupees this year. It added that the rail network and operations have expanded significantly over the last decade. It further added that Railways is increasing its manpower to support higher levels of operations and to enhance safety.

To meet the higher manpower costs, the Railways said it is focusing on higher cargo loading along with a small rationalisation of passenger fares.
