De Jure Transfer Day was celebrated today in Puducherry. The day marks the formal transfer of the erstwhile French settlements of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam to the Indian Union in 1962, following the Treaty of Cession.

 

Earlier, in 1954, a referendum was held at Keezhur where an overwhelming majority voted in favour of joining India.

At the Keezhur Memorial, Puducherry Legislative Assembly Speaker  R. Selvam unfurled the National Flag and paid tributes. Freedom fighters were honoured at the event. 

 

In Yanam, Regional Administrator  R. Munisamy and other dignitaries paid floral tributes at the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial at Gandhi Municipal Park.
