President Mohammad Shahabuddin has summoned the first session of the 13th Parliament for March 12, nearly a month after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed the government following its victory in the February 12 general elections. According to a Jatiya Sangsad statement, the President convened the session under Article 72(1) of the Constitution. The maiden sitting will begin at 11:00 am, with the BNP holding a two-thirds majority and Jamaat-e-Islami serving as the main opposition.
BNP spokesperson and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed earlier said the session will elect a new Speaker. However, it remains unclear who will preside over the inaugural sitting, as tradition calls for the previous Speaker or Deputy Speaker to oversee proceedings until a new Speaker is chosen.
