Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has conducted a first of its kind exercise in the country to control plastic pollution in the State.
The Board has carried out Plastic Waste Brand Audit-2025 in six cities of Punjab including Mohali, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala and Bathinda to find out which companies produce maximum plastic waste. PPCB has found 14 major companies including 4 multi-national companies as the top contributors of hard-to-recycle plastic waste and are responsible for about 59% of non-recyclable waste.
These companies have been identified after analysing 11,810 plastic packets used by them under different brand names. Whereas, out of 6,991 kg of total municipal waste studied by the PPCB, it has found 613 kg hard-to-recycle plastic waste.
PPCB Chairperson Reena Gupta informed that the Board has summoned these 14 leading brands and directed them to present clear and time-bound strategies to control plastic pollution being created by them. She said no company will be allowed to pollute Punjab and polluters’ accountability will be fixed.
At the same time, she added that PPCB will continue to enhance monitoring, enforcement, and industry collaboration besides people’s contribution to take Punjab towards a cleaner and plastic-responsible State.
