PM Modi Urges AI Development That Advances Innovation, Inclusion, and Human Values

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised creating an AI future that advances innovation, strengthens inclusion, and moves forward by incorporating human values. Addressing Leader’s plenary at the India AI Impact Summit this afternoon, Mr Modi said, when technology and human trust go hand in hand, the true impact of AI will be visible on the world. He said, India’s direction regarding AI is clear, India’s vision is clear, and AI is a shared resource for the benefit of all humanity.

The Prime Minister said, AI Technology should be accesssible for all and it should be goal of every nation. Mr Modi said, aspirational India has a big role in the global journey of Artificial Intelligence. He said, it is believed that this Summit will play a crucial role in building a human-centric, sensitive global AI ecosystem. He said, looking at the history, humans have transformed every disruption into a new opportunity.

The Prime Minister said, today, people have once again faced such an opportunity. He emphasised the timeless wisdom of Lord Buddha, stating that India, the land where Buddha attained enlightenment, stands as a beacon of peace and enlightenment to the world. He quoted the words of the Buddha, Right action comes from right understanding. He said, therefore, it is very important that the nations together create a roadmap that shows the true impact of AI. He added that true impact comes only when we take right decisions at the right time.

On the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence, the Prime Minister made three vital suggestions. Firstly, he highlighted the need for a robust data framework for AI training that respects data sovereignty. The Prime Minister emphasized that if the data used in AI systems is insecure, imbalanced, or unreliable, the outputs generated will lack trustworthiness. He stressed that the establishment of a global, trusted data framework is crucial to ensure transparency and accuracy in AI development. Secondly, Mr. Modi underscored the importance of clear and transparent safety rules for AI platforms. He called for a shift from the opaque black box approach to a glass box, where the safety protocols are visible and verifiable. Such transparency will promote ethical behaviour in business practices, fostering trust and responsibility in the use of AI.

The Prime Minister said, third, the paperclip problem is often cited in AI research. If a machine is given the goal of simply making paperclips, it will continue to do so, even at the cost of devouring all the world’s resources. He said AI requires clear human values and guidance.
