Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting flood-affected Punjab tomorrow to take stock of the present situation. He is likely to hold a review meeting also. The Punjab government has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a Rs 20,000 crore relief package for the flood-affected state during his visit.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, said that the Punjab government is assessing the loss for compensation, and the central government teams are also taking stock. He said the central government will release the funds after the submission of the total loss report by the Chief Secretary of Punjab.
Meanwhile, the situation is gradually coming under control in the state. Many areas are still struggling to come to terms with the accumulated floodwater in fields and other areas. Controlled release of extra water from Bhakra and Pong Dams is also adding to the problem to some extent, but the quantity of water released has been reduced now.
However, people have taken a sigh of relief with the prediction of the weather department of no heavy rain in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the tally of human lives lost has increased to 48. More than 3 lakh 87 thousand people have been directly displaced from 2050 villages across the state, and thousands have been evacuated. Locals, NGOs and expert teams of the Indian Army, BSF and NDRF are carrying on with relief and rescue operations on a war footing.
