Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the valedictory celebrations of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, marking the birth anniversary of the legendary Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu this afternoon. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi said he prayed at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in the district today for the welfare of 140 crore Indians and for the continued progress of India. He said, the names of Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola are synonymous with India’s identity and pride.
The Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin in honour of one of the greatest emperors of India, Rajendra Chola I. Music composer Ilaiyaraaja also performed at the event.
On the second day of his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu today, Mr Modi also offered prayers at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in the district. The Prime Minister also held a grand roadshow. Large crowds had gathered on either side of the route, waving flags and chanting slogans to welcome him. The entire village wore a festive look, with the temple town beautifully decorated with flowers, traditional banners, and Chola-era motifs.
Today’s celebrations also mark the 1,000th anniversary of Rajendra Chola I’s maritime expedition to Southeast Asia and the construction of the UNESCO-listed Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple. The Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival 2025 offers a majestic tribute to the enduring legacy of Rajendra Chola I and the cultural brilliance of the Chola dynasty. Aadi Thiruvathirai Nakshathiram is a significant day in the Tamil calendar, particularly within Shaiva traditions, as it marks the birth star of the Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I. It is celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi and is associated with the Thiruvathirai nakshathiram.
