In Sikkim, the Pakyong district administration has taken initiative to cultivate in barren land under the Mission Revival of Barren Land for Cultivation. Over 200 acres of barren land have been brought under cultivation in the district in the past 18 months. Official sources told Akashvani News that under the direction of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, district administration continues to engage rural communities in converting uncultivated land into productive fields.
Importantly millet cultivation has got a boost under this initiative in Pakyong. Nearly 25 acre of barren lands have been taken for millet with the active participation of local. Recently, millet transplantation activities were initiated at the at Samsing area. The initiative is expected to cover an additional 50 to 60 acres of land with millet crops during this season. Apart from millet, seasonal vegetables and fruits are also being produced in areas which were in no use earlier. All the products are being sold in the market by the villagers.
