Over 20 killed after coltan mine collapse in Congo

More than 20 people have died following a collapse at a coltan mine in the central African country Democratic Republic of Congo. Authorities said that at least 19 bodies were recovered yesterday from the mine, located in the Masisi territory of North Kivu Province. They added that around 100 people were rescued during the ongoing operation. According to media reports, the current toll remains provisional as rescue efforts continue, and several people are still buried. The cause of the collapse remains unknown. Rubaya, home to one of the world’s largest coltan reserves, has been under the control of the M23 armed group since April 2024.
