Opposition legislators voice strong objections to CM’s comments on debt repayment

Opposition legislators have voiced strong objections to the Chief Minister’s recent remarks regarding the repayment of debts incurred by the previous administration.

The criticism followed a statement by Pu Lalduhoma, who, in response to a query raised by Hachek Constituency MLA Pu Robert Romawia, asserted that the ZPM-led government had been repaying liabilities left behind by the former government.

Leader of the Opposition, Pu Lalchhandama Ralte, said that as the ruling party, ZPM bears the responsibility of managing the state’s finances, including settling outstanding debts. He remarked that it is customary for every new administration to service the debts of its predecessor, but criticised what he described as repeated references to the previous government in this context.

Congress MLA Pu Ngunlianchunga also took issue with the Chief Minister’s phrasing, particularly the expression “Kan Rulh Sak” (we paid for them). He questioned whose debts were being referred to and suggested it would be more appropriate to state that the government, rather than a particular party, had repaid the dues.

Meanwhile, MNF MLA Pu R. Lalthangliana said that attributing blame to others was not the approach adopted by the previous administration. He further expressed concern over what he described as inconsistencies in the Chief Minister’s choice of words when addressing the issue.
