Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today announced the revival of the traditional bi-annual Darbar Move after a gap of more than four years. Addressing a press conference in Jammu today, Mr Abdulla said the state cabinet had given its nod to resume the century-old tradition and the file was approved by the Lieutenant Governor.

 

 

Our Correspondent reports, the Darbar Move practice, which involves shifting the capital between Jammu and Srinagar with the change of season, was halted by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration in 2021.

 

 

The Darbar Move was introduced in 1872 by Maharaja Gulab Singh to ensure administrative accessibility across both the Kashmir and Jammu regions. The government’s decision marks the return of one of J&K’s oldest administrative traditions. 

 

 

The Apni Party President, Syed Altaf Bukhari, hailed the government’s decision to resume the traditional biannual Darbar Move. He said it preserves Jammu and Kashmir’s historic legacy and socio-cultural fabric.
