Odisha Flood Alert: Heavy Rains Cause Rivers to Overflow, Inundating Villages and Damaging Embankments

In Odisha, several parts of the state including the northern region are facing a rising flood threat as continuous heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Subarnarekha, Jalaka, and Baitarani rivers has led to overflowing waters and widespread disruption.

Several villages have been inundated, embankments breached, and normal life thrown out of gear, particularly in northern parts of the state. In Jajpur district, the situation is critical as the Baitarani river crossed the danger mark at Akhuapada. Swelling water levels of the its branch river, the Kani, has caused multiple breaches in embankments, flooding nearby villages and raising concerns in vulnerable areas.

In Cuttack district, floodwaters from the swelling Mahanadi—intensified by the release of water from the Hirakud dam—have affected the historic Bhattarika temple in Baramba and entered low-lying regions, sparking panic among residents.

Meanwhile, the Jalaka river has wreaked havoc in the Basta block of Balasore district. In response, the state government has launched emergency repair work, using sandbags and bamboo reinforcements to prevent further damage.
