Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asserted that no single person will get citizenship in the state if entered after 2014. Talking to newspersons at Sivsagar this morning, the Chief Minister said that only those whose names would not be included in the NRC may get the benefit as per the provision of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Chief Minister said that he would resign if anyone who has not applied for the NRC and gets benefits through the CAA. Mr. Sarma said that now people would get to know how many foreigners would apply for citizenship and the picture would be clear after 45 days. Meanwhile, several organizations are protesting against the implementation of CAA. The Congress-led 16-party United Opposition Forum, Assam announced a state-wide shutdown today. Chief Minister Sarma has warned that political parties could lose their registrations if found to be organizing strikes and protests against the implementation of CAA. He said, such protests would be considered a violation as per the Gauhati High Court order of 19th of March last year. A delegation of All Assam Students is likely to visit Delhi to urge the Centre to withdraw the CAA. Security has been strengthened across the state to avoid any untoward incident.
