NITI Aayog releases reports on green transition in cement, aluminium and MSME sectors

NITI Aayog has released the reports outlining decarbonisation roadmaps for the cement, aluminum and MSME sectors in New Delhi. During the event, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Suman Bery highlighted the critical role of the MSME sector and sustained economic growth in India’s development journey.

He underlined the importance of strengthening the MSME sector, which remains a key driver of employment, innovation and inclusive growth.

Meanwhile, Niti Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said the aluminium and cement sectors are among the most energy-intensive sectors, which contribute to industrial emissions. He stressed that decarbonisation across these sectors is essential for achieving India’s climate commitments while ensuring long term economic competitiveness.

Mr Subrahmanyam stated that the roadmap presents a vision to support the aluminium, cement and MSME sectors in reducing emissions while continuing to grow and remain competitive.

The NITI Aayog CEO further said that for MSMEs, the roadmap emphasises access to affordable green finance, technology and capacity building to enable a smooth and inclusive transition.

The report proposes to prioritise the use of refuse-derived fuels, clinker substitution, scaling up of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage and effective implementation of Carbon Credit Trading Scheme to enable deep decarbonisation in the sector.

The report also highlighted the roadmap for Green Transition of MSMEs, which focuses on three key levers, including deployment of energy-efficient equipment, adoption of alternative fuels and integration of green electricity.
