Nikkei Rises 1.1% as Most Asian, European Markets Shut for Labour Day

Most Asian markets, except Japan, were closed for trading in observance of Labour Day. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei index rose over 1.1 percent today. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 0.5 percent for a second straight meeting as worries continued to grow about the impact of US President Donald Trump’s policies. The BOJ halved its economic growth projection to 0.5 percent for this fiscal year in a sign of heightened caution following the US levies and countermeasures by others. Among major European indices, London’s FTSE 100 was trading nearly flat when reports last came in, while markets in Germany and France were closed for Labour Day.
