NHRC takes Suo Motu action against NGOs misusing its name and logo

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police (DGP) of all the States and Union Territories to identify NGOs misusing the name of the commission to mislead the public. Taking suo motu cognisance, the NHRC observed that some NGOs are using misleading credentials and designations of the commission. It said that continuation of such illusory names may erode public trust and lead to possible misappropriation of funds.

The Commission has asked the concerned authorities to take immediate legal action within two weeks, including cancellation of registrations obtained in violation of norms. NHRC has also directed the Chief Secretaries of Karnataka and Delhi, along with the DGP of Karnataka and the Police Commissioner of Delhi, to submit reports within two weeks regarding the action taken against the NGO.
