NHRC issues notices to Haryana Chief Secretary and Gurugram Police Commissioner in connection with workers’ deaths

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the state Chief Secretary and the Police Commissioner, Gurugram, in connection with a media report of the death of seven workers and injuries to three others in a wall collapse at an under-construction site near Bilaspur, Haryana. The media report cited that the police, as well as other agencies, including the civil defence teams, rescue workers, firefighters and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force, were searching for the trapped workers under the debris. Taking suo motu cognisance, NHRC has called for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. It said that the contents of the report, if found true, raise serious issues of violation of the human rights of the victims.
