The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Prisons, Chhattisgarh in case of the reported death of 285 inmates in different jails of the state over the past four years. Taking suo motu cognizance in the case, the Commission has asked for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. According to media reports, prisons in the state are mostly overcrowded which is leading to increased spread of infections and mental stress among the inmates.
