New Labour Codes Strengthen MSME Sector and Worker Welfare

The new Labour Codes implemented by the government on 21st of last month are poised to offer stability to workers’ livelihoods across India. Our correspondent brings a report on how the new reforms are providing a direct benefit to the MSME sector across the country. A report

With the latest reforms under the New Labour Codes, the government has significantly improved labour governance for the MSME sector across the country. By consolidating 29 earlier laws into four simplified Codes, MSMEs now benefit from a clearer and more streamlined compliance system. The shift to single registration, single licence and single return filing reduces administrative pressure, allowing small and medium enterprises to focus more on productivity and growth. The reforms ensure that no worker in MSMEs is paid below the minimum wage and that overtime is compensated at not less than twice the regular rate. Standard working hours, timely wage payments and mandatory workplace facilities further strengthen protection for MSME employees.

The Codes also expand social security coverage, enabling workers in small industries to access health insurance, maternity benefits, pension and other welfare schemes. Additionally, national-level safety and health standards improve workplace conditions, making the MSME ecosystem more secure and efficient. The revised labour framework brings clarity, reduced compliance burden and enhanced worker welfare, supporting the MSME sector’s role in driving India’s economic development.
