Nepal Govt Schools Reopen After Month-Long Teachers’ Protest, 9-Point Deal Reached

The 28-day-long Kathmandu-centric agitation of the public school teachers ended on Wednesday after the government of Nepal affirmed a 9-point agreement with agitating teachers. All academic sessions in public schools will start on Friday, May 2.

Following the agreement between the government and the Teachers’ Federation, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Raghuji Pant, informed that all teachers and school employees would be provided a discount during treatment at Civil Hospital, Kathmandu. Moreover, the teachers, security personnel, employees and journalists injured during the protest would be provided treatment free of cost.

The teachers working in temporary categories – relief quota, learning grant, technical stream, special education, among others – will be allowed sick leave reserves, and a lump sum of money earned on this leave will be provided upon retirement. The remuneration to the early child development facilitator and school employees will be provided as per the government scheme; the grade system for the permanent teachers will be aligned with the civil service’s grade system. Both permanent and temporary teachers of various categories will be provided with remote allowance, and the teachers and employees at community schools will be linked to the Social Security Fund. The new education bill will be passed by Nepal’s federal parliament before June 26 as per the agreement.

Earlier, the teachers gathered in thousands from across Nepal, and protest demonstrations continued in the New Baneshwor to Babarmahal section of the Kathmandu Valley for the last 28 days. After school reopens on Friday, parents are relieved and expect regular classes.
