Nepal’s traditionally celebrated Mahalaxmi Jatra in Banepa of Kavrepalanchok is being observed by participation of thousands of devotees with great devotion and enthusiasm. The Jatra is celebrated with prayers for wealth, prosperity, and shared well-being and concludes today. The festival has long played a role in uniting the local community.

Historic town of Banepa comes alive during the Mahalaxmi Jatra when thousands of devotees gather to celebrate the vibrant Jatra. During the three-day festival that starts on Akshay Tritiya, wooden chariots are built at Ugrachandi temple for carrying the statues of Mahalaxmi, Shiv and Ganesh. Carrying the idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi, devotees pull the chariot across the town, seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.

Youth play traditional panche baja; dancing to the music, all participants throw vermillion at each other turning streets of banepa town red. The festival reflects deep-rooted faith, as generations come together to honor the goddess. Traditional music and cultural performances add to the festive spirit, preserving centuries-old heritage. With devotion, color, and effort to preserve centuries old tradition, Mahalaxmi Jatra continues to reflect Nepal’s cultural life and community bonding.
