Nepal Celebrates Third Day of Gai Tihar, Worshipping Cows as Goddess Laxmi

In Nepal, third day of the five-day-long Gai Tihar festival is being celebrated throughout the Himalayan Nation. In this festival, Hindus worship cows as Goddess Laxmi, deity of wealth and prosperity. The cow is garlanded and fed various delicacies. People are performing Laxmi and Ganesh puja by lighting butterlamps in their houses and feasting on traditional cuisines as Selroti, anarsa, Lakhamari, jeri, laddu and Kheer. 
The sale, distribution, and use of firecrackers are officially banned In Nepal, restrictions have been put in place for the Tihar festival for environmental concern and public health. Deusi-Bhailo celebrations in Tihar has been restricted to 9 p.m. to minimize disturbance. 
Meanwhile, on occassion of Diwali celebration, Nepal exported 1,015 megawatts of electricity to India on the day of Laxmi Pooja. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the total demand for power reached 1,650 megawatts on the single evening. Currently, Nepal is exporting its surplus energy to the Indian and Bangladesh.
