Nepal celebrates International Yoga Day with mega events at iconic sites

Yoga, an ancient practice with its origins in India, has grown into a global movement, particularly following the United Nations’ declaration of 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. Addressing a function organised by Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on the 11th International Yoga Day in Patan today, PM K P Sharma Oli stated yoga is associated with humanity and peace, and that it is meant for the welfare of mankind and world peace. Yoga is also related to the ‘happy Nepali and the prosperous nation’ and ‘Nirogi Nepal Abhiyan.

 

Celebrating Yoga Day in Pokhara, a mega yoga demonstration was organised in Pokhara by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu in collaboration with Pokhara Municipality. More than 7000 yoga enthusiasts practised yoga together in Pokhara Rangshaala Stadium today. On the occasion, Chief Minister of Gandaki Pradesh, Surendra Raj Pandey, emphasised that yoga has been organised on a Mega Scale for the last three years in Pokhara and is a shared ancient cultural tradition leading to healthy living.

 

From last several weeks, as a part of a series of events being conducted by the Embassy of India to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga across various cities in Nepal, Yoga demonstration with huge public participation was organised in Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, Narayangadh in Chitwan, Fewa Lake in Pokhara, mid-point of Nepal at Lamjung, UNESCO Heritage sites in Kathmandu Valley and other iconic locations.

 

Embassy of India in Kathmandu and its associated offices in Pokhara, Birgunj, and Dharana have been intensively organising Yoga Sessions across iconic locations in Nepal to draw people’s attention to yogic practices. As a run-up event for the 21st June major celebration this year, Yoga sessions were organised in the UNESCO Heritage site of Patan Durbar Square, Changu Narayan Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Temple and Kathmandu Durbar Square.

 

Intending to nurture young minds, enduring the essence of harmony and holistic well-being, Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kathmandu had a huge participation of students from various schools across Kathmandu city. Yoga sessions were organised in the Nepal Army Headquarters and ICIMOD, Kathmandu.

 

A yoga photo contest was organised a week ago in Nepal to promote awareness about yoga and its benefits, especially its connection with nature. Participants are sharing their photographs depicting various yoga postures at scenic spots significant in Nepal. A large number of people registered themselves on the Yoga Sangam Portal for Yoga Mahotsav.
