Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that the National Education Policy NEP is advocating for mother tongue-based education. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha today, Mr Pradhan said, Samagra Siksha Abhiyan, NEP and PM Sri are inter-related. He said, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan has also been aligned with the recommendations of National Education Policy.
About Tamil Nadu, Mr Pradhan noted a recent Supreme Court observation that the State has not implemented central education schemes and set up Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. He said these should be implemented in letter and spirit. Replying to another question, Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar highlighted that the Government is running programmes like Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) and Study in India to attract foreign talent.
He also informed that University Grants Commission UGC has introduced double degrees and twin degrees with universities abroad, an option which was not available before. Mr Majumdar said Indian Universities are also opening their branches abroad.
