Labour and Employment Minister, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said that, today nearly 64 percent of citizens receive at least one form of social security, making India the world’s second-largest provider of social security benefits. Speaking at IndiaEdge 2025 conference in New Delhi today, he emphasized on transforming labour laws for global competitiveness by consolidating old labour laws into the newly introduced labour codes. He said that these reforms are designed to attract Foreign Direct Investment, ensure worker welfare, strengthen social security, and promote industry-labour harmony.
Dr Mandaviya said that the new labour codes drew insights from the International Labour Organisation by introducing several worker-friendly measures. These include mandatory appointment letters, equal pay provisions for women, annual health check-ups for workers above 40, one-year eligibility for gratuity, unified registration and licensing systems, and extended Employees’ State Insurance coverage even for firms with a single employee. The Minister added that women’s welfare remains a key priority in the new labour codes highlighting equal pay, safer workplaces and greater work flexibility to strengthen the country’s workforce and economic growth.
