In West Bengal, a student from Odisha, studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, was raped allegedly by three men. Police have detained one person after the victim’s parents lodged an FIR. The second-year MBBS student was allegedly gang-raped near the college premises on Friday evening. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged his West Bengal counterpart, Mamata Banerjee, to take swift action against the perpetrators of the crime.
The survivor, from Jaleswar in Odisha, is undergoing treatment at the college hospital and gave her statement to the police. The National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the West Bengal DGP seeking the immediate arrest of the accused. The NCW has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident. In a social media post, NCW has informed that it has asked for an action taken report within 5 days. Dr Archana Majumdar, member of the NCW, visited the private medical college in Durgapur yesterday. She also spoke to the victim in the hospital and inspected the crime spot.
The alleged assault has sparked widespread condemnation. Doctors’ forums and opposition parties have demanded strict punishment for those responsible for such a heinous crime. Odisha and West Bengal units of the BJP demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits. The BJP has alleged TMC government over the law and order situation. The party gheraoed the New Township police station yesterday. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul staged a protest at the Triveni area in Asansol town also. Durgapur gang rape happened 14 months after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder of a medic.
