In Gujarat, Ahmedabad Zonal Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured the conviction of two individuals for possession of contraband in a significant blow to inter-state drug trafficking networks. A Kapadvanj court in Gujarat yesterday sentenced the accused, Rais Mohammad of Rajasthan and Faiyaz Ahmed of Ahmedabad, to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of one lakh rupees each under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
They were found guilty of possessing 4-Methylethcathinone. The duo was arrested in January 2023 after being found in possession of 4-MEC, a dangerous synthetic stimulant linked to severe health complications, including kidney failure and even death. The NCB urged the public to aid ongoing anti-drug efforts and share information about drug trafficking through its toll-free helpline 1933, assuring complete confidentiality for informants.
In another case, the NCB secured three convictions in Bhubaneswar as a local court sentenced three individuals to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh each in connection with the August 2021 seizure of 20 kg of opium.
The contraband was found concealed in a specially crafted cavity inside a truck’s driver’s cabin during an NCB Bhubaneswar operation.
