Natural farming promotes diversified fields where plants, trees & livestock coexist, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today highlighted the importance of natural farming, saying that it promotes diversified fields where plants, trees, and livestock coexist to support natural biodiversity. In an article shared on social media, Mr. Modi issued a clarion call to people across India to adopt and expand natural farming practices. He said that natural farming draws from India’s traditional knowledge systems as well as modern ecological principles to cultivate crops without synthetic chemicals. Mr Modi added that the approach relies on recycling farm residues and enhancing soil health through mulching and aeration, rather than depending on external inputs.

Mr. Modi also shared that two weeks ago he attended a Summit on Natural Farming in Coimbatore, which left a lasting impression on his mind. He noted that India has made commendable progress in this field. He said that last year, the Government launched the National Mission on Natural Farming, which has already connected lakhs of farmers with sustainable practices. He said that government efforts such as encouraging exports, significantly expanding institutional credit through the Kisan Credit Card including for livestock and fisheries, and the PM-Kisan scheme have also benefited farmers pursuing natural farming. Mr Modi added that natural farming is closely linked to India’s efforts to promote Shree Anna, or millets.
