Nagaland: International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Observed in Kohima

In Nagaland, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was observed today at the College of Nursing in Kohima, joining communities around the world in remembering lives lost to HIV and AIDS.

Speaking on the occasion, District AIDS Control Officer (DISHA), Dr. Chibenthung Kithan, said the memorial is one of the world’s oldest and most significant community-led movements in response to HIV and AIDS.

He said this year’s theme, “Light the Legacy: Remember. Advance. Act.,” reflects remembrance, hope, resilience, and responsibility. He added that the observance honours those who lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses while renewing commitment to support people living with HIV and strengthen efforts to end the epidemic.

Dr. Kithan said the event symbolises solidarity, compassion, and hope, while recognising the contributions of activists, healthcare workers, caregivers, and community leaders in shaping the global HIV response.

He stressed the need for collective action by governments, communities, educational institutions, families, and civil society organisations to end stigma and ensure accessible healthcare and support services for all.

He also highlighted the role of young people in spreading awareness, promoting empathy, encouraging safe practices, and fostering social inclusion.
