Myanmar Hit by 3.3 Magnitude Quake Following Major Tremors in March

An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 struck Myanmar early this morning. The latest tremor follows the powerful 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude earthquakes that hit central Myanmar on March 28, which displaced thousands. The World Health Organisation has since warned of rising health risks in the affected areas, including tuberculosis, HIV, and vector- and water-borne diseases.

Myanmar lies in a highly active seismic zone, positioned between the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma tectonic plates. The country is prone to moderate and large earthquakes, as well as possible tsunami hazards along its coastline. Experts note that the 1,400-kilometre-long Sagaing Fault, running through central Myanmar, poses a significant risk to major cities such as Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon. Yangon, though distant from the fault, remains vulnerable due to its dense population.
