The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai proposed an education budget of four thousand and 248.08 crore rupees for the year 2026-27, a significant increase from last year’s three thousand and 674 crore rupees. As per the budget proposal, revenue generation of over three thousand and 758 crore rupees has been estimated, while capital expenditure has been pegged at around 490 crore rupees.
The budget estimates were presented by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr Avinash Dhakne to Education Committee Chairperson Smt Rajeshree Shirwadkar in Mumbai this morning.
With an aim to ensure the holistic development of students, MCGM has announced the rollout of Mission SAFAL for the upcoming academic year. The initiative aims to integrate co-curricular activities with academic learning.
Further, MCGM has earmarked 340 crore rupees for school infrastructure, including repairs, upgrades, and reconstruction, while 187.57 crore is allocated for the procurement of free scholastic materials for primary and secondary students.
The civic body has also proposed the distribution of 19,317 tablets to Class 9 students, costing 21.83 crore, while a cost of 24.46 crore rupees has been proposed for the continued rollout of digital classrooms.
The civic body has further proposed to set up astronomical laboratories in 40 schools with a provision of three crores, while a five crore budget has been proposed for setting up science parks on an experimental basis in 2 school buildings. A provision of 42 crore rupees has been proposed for CCTV installation across school premises, while 1.35 crore rupees have been set aside for the purchase of musical instruments.
MCGM has said that Road Safety Patrol programmes involving 9,480 students and disaster management training for Classes 6-10 will continue as planned. Further, cyber literacy training will be provided to students of classes 8 and 9 through the National Forensic Sciences University.
