The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organising a nationwide athletics league – ASMITA across the nation, including Punjab, to celebrate women in sports on the occasion of International Women’s Day tomorrow.
ASMITA, which means Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action is a unique initiative to celebrate women in sports. The event will focus on athletics (100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters) across the age groups of Under-13, 13-18 years and 18+ categories. A record 2 lakh 50 thousand women are expected to participate in it. According to Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, the event will be held at 250 locations in 30 states and Union Territories across the country.
AIR Correspondent reports that in Punjab, the event will be held in 12 districts, including Patiala, which is amongst the 30 special districts chosen for the event. The Union Territory of Chandigarh is also organizing it. ASMITA is part of Khelo India’s gender-neutral mission to promote sports among women through leagues and competitions. Since the year 2021 when the league was launched, more than 2600 such leagues have been conducted across 34 sports disciplines in over 550 districts and 700 cities in the country.
