Ministry of Panchayati Raj begins two-day PESA Mahotsav in Visakhapatnam

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has begun the two-day PESA Mahotsav in Visakhapatnam today to mark the anniversary of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996. The celebrations will conclude tomorrow.

The PESA Act seeks to empower tribal communities by extending Panchayati Raj institutions to Scheduled Areas and strengthening the role of Gram Sabhas in local self-governance. The Mahotsav is being organised to create awareness about the Act and to improve the capacity of Gram Panchayats in these areas.

Addressing the media, Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj Joint Secretary Mukta Shekhar said the event reflects the Government of India’s commitment to community-led governance and tribal empowerment. She said the Mahotsav provides a platform to highlight tribal culture and the role of Gram Sabhas in local development.

As part of the inaugural activities, the PESA Mahotsav mascot “Krishna Jinka” was unveiled, and PESA Run T-shirts and caps were released. Around 1,500 participants from 10 states are taking part in the Mahotsav. The programme includes sports events such as kabaddi, archery, traditional tribal games and a PESA Run. Demonstration games with the participation of tribal communities are also being conducted.

Cultural programmes reflecting tribal traditions from different states are being held during the event. Exhibitions featuring tribal food products, handicrafts and artworks have also been arranged at the venue.
