Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik has said that India has addressed the critical issue of power deficiency by adding 296 Giga Watt of fresh generation capacity since April 2014. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Mr Naik said that the government has transformed the country from power deficit to a power-sufficient. He said there is adequate availability of power in the country, and the present installed power generation capacity is over 520 Giga Watt.
The Minister said that four crore 55 lakh smart meters have been installed to date under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Mr Naik said that overall, 5 crore 97 lakh smart meters have been installed across the country under various schemes.
