Min Aung Hlaing has been sworn in as the elected President of Myanmar today. He has led the country with strict military control since taking power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in 2021. His presidency follows a general election that was widely criticized by United Nations experts and human rights groups, as many political parties, including Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, declined participation in the election. The pro-military bloc holds nearly 90% of the seats in the two-chamber legislature. Of the 30 new cabinet members sworn in today, 28 are current or former generals, lawmakers from the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, or members of the previous military government.
