In view of heavy and continuous rainfall in the upper reaches, authorities have opened all the gates of Salal Dam in Reasi district to manage the rising water levels. Our Correspondent reports that the step has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the dam structure and to regulate the excessive inflow of water from upstream areas. With the release of large volumes of water, the water level in the Chenab River and its tributaries is expected to rise significantly. Low-lying areas and villages situated along the riverbanks are likely to face the impact of the sudden surge. District administration has issued an advisory urging residents, particularly those living near the river, to remain vigilant and avoid venturing close to the riverbanks. Fishermen and people engaged in activities near the river have been strictly advised to stay away until the situation stabilizes. Rescue and relief teams have been kept on alert, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any untoward incident. People are requested to cooperate with the administration and follow safety guidelines.
However, a landslide hit the track of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine today at the Sammar Point of the track, thereby blocking the route to the shrine. However, there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the incident, as there were no pilgrims. Efforts are on to clear the debris. The pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine remains suspended for the ninth consecutive day today owing to persistent bad weather conditions leaving the Katra base camp deserted in the absence of devotees.
