Members of BASL decide to refrain from appearing before courts nationwide in protest over fatal shooting in Colombo

Members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) have decided to refrain from appearing before courts nationwide in protest over the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Colombo on Saturday.

BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya has said the decision was taken at a special general meeting following extensive deliberations on the implications of the attack, describing it as a collective stand by the legal community against violence targeting its members.

The association adopted four resolutions, calling on the government to curb what it termed a growing culture of killings, urging police to swiftly arrest those responsible, and condemning the circulation of unverified information about the crime.

The meeting, held at BASL headquarters, marked the first island-wide assembly of the Bar in 14 years.
