Rashtriya Samaj Party and Congress will contest municipal corporations and Zilla Parishad elections together, says RSP president Mahadev Jankar and Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshvardhan Sapkal today announced that the Congress and the Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) will jointly contest the municipal corporation and Zilla Parishad elections.
A detailed discussion regarding the alliance took place today at Tilak Bhavan between Rashtriya Samaj Party president and former minister Mahadev Jankar and Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal. After the meeting, both leaders formally announced the alliance at a press conference.
Speaking to the media, Mr Sapkal said that at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party is undermining democracy and the Constitution, like-minded parties have decided to come together and fight unitedly.
Speaking on the occasion, Rashtriya Samaj Party national president Mahadev Jankar said that while working with the ideology of Shivaji, Shahu, Phule and Ambedkar, it was felt that like-minded parties should stand united.
He added that he had met the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in Delhi. The elections for the 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai and Pune, are scheduled for 15 January. Counting of votes is scheduled on 16 January.
